Toby Baker has over many years adopted a policy of contesting both the basic assumptions about health that underpin fresh meat health legislation and in particular has, from its outset, robustly criticized the Meat Hygiene Service in every aspect of its activities.
Very often this has attracted severe criticism, not necessarily from the official bodies concerned, but frequently from colleagues with the industry. Toby does not claim spectacular success in promoting his ideas and policies although recent proposals to change EU regulations (properly handled) and recent severe independent criticism of the Meat Hygiene Service do perhaps bring the debate nearer to territory he has occupied alone over the years.
